The perpetrators broke into the Cabaret district, killed several residents and set fire to houses, the newspaper “Le Nouvelliste” reported on Wednesday (local time), citing the city authorities. “The bandits have shown incomparable cruelty. Some of the bodies are charred,” Mayor Joseph Jeanson Guillaume said. The police had previously driven the gang members from the area.
Haiti descends into chaos: Rival gangs have been fighting for control of the greater Port-au-Prince area for more than a year. Tens of thousands of people have had to flee their homes because of the escalating violence.
The fighting also exacerbates the already precarious supply situation in the bitterly poor Caribbean country. The caretaker government asked the United Nations for help through an armed international force. (sda/dpa)
