Tons of drugs seized, a number of criminals caught: according to the European police authority Europol, it has managed to crack down on a cocaine “super cartel”.
A total of 49 suspects were arrested in coordinated raids in various European countries and in the United Arab Emirates (VAR), Europol announced in The Hague on Monday. According to the information, among them were 6 people classified as “high ranking” drug lords, all of whom were caught in Dubai.
Police forces in Spain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, the VAR and the US were involved in the operations in November 2022 and in the previous year. The raids targeted both a command center and the logistical infrastructure for drug trafficking in Europe.
Those arrested are said to have formed a cartel that controls about a third of the cocaine trade in Europe and are guilty of large-scale money laundering. The scale of cocaine smuggling into Europe, which was controlled by this cartel, was “enormous”: more than 30 tons of drugs were seized during the investigation, according to Europol. (sda/dpa)
