Sido has already rapped about drug excess in a number of his hits. But when he married Charlotte Engelhardt in 2012 and had two sons with her, this phase of his life seemed almost over – until the family idyll fell apart in 2020, as Sido now revealed to “Spiegel”. In the interview, he laid everything on the table and told his story of the past two years, in which he almost killed himself with drugs.

Sido crashed after divorce

Like many, Sido’s crash started at the same time as the pandemic. So “ghosts” came, making him unfaithful. Later, his wife rightfully kicked him out, the rapper explained. So he fell into old patterns and used many chemical drugs – to the point of unconsciousness. He was especially fond of cocaine and with hard drugs he always ended up in a drug-sex cycle.

That’s how it went for a while, according to the “Mirror” people from Sido’s environment also confirmed. He behaved inconsiderately to his family, was banned from several hotels and did not even appear at the funeral of his concert promoter.

At the beginning of this year, rap colleague Kool Savas and his ex-wife would have given the impetus to accept help. Sido received a voice memo from Savas emphasizing in a trembling voice that he was “really concerned” about him. A little later, his ex-wife made an appointment for admission. Sido explained:

The clinic saved his life

When he arrived at the clinic, his healing process began. It was especially challenging to stay sober and to endure the clarity. But that’s exactly what saved his life, the rapper now reflected:

However, as the craving for the drugs persisted, Sido described the withdrawal as just the beginning. However, what surprised him was that he only had a drug problem. According to Würdig, as Sido’s real name is, he also assumed depression and narcissism.

Sido “messed up” with his sons

During his stay at the clinic, he also acknowledged the extent to which his own father, who left him when he was two years old, had influenced him. Now, for the first time, he has admitted and dealt with his father complex.

According to Sido, the lack of a male role model also affected his role as a father. The victims of his story are mainly his four sons. The rapper reported that they still resent his behavior, which he understands. He “fucked” them all, which would be an achievement:

In addition to his children, however, his marriage also suffered greatly from his addiction. Sido has been a divorced man for only a few weeks, although he really wanted to live with a family. But he failed and may just not have been made for the perfect family life, Würdig explains.

New album is about the past years

On his new album, Sido now deals with all this. In the old days, with the silver mask in front of his face, he would never have gone to therapy, he insisted. Also not to be a target for attacks in the hip-hop business.

But now he didn’t care, he didn’t have to prove anything to anyone. One of the songs is about an apology to his children. When he wrote this song, Sido reported that he cried for the first time in the clinic.
