The number of corona cases has been declining in recent weeks. Three weeks ago there were 23,867 cases, then there were 20,951 and last Tuesday the Federal Public Service of Public Health (BAG) reported 20,779 new infections. But the next variant could lead to more cases.
The hellhound Cerberus is a new descendant of the omicron variant and is spreading throughout Switzerland. This Covid variant is described in Science BQ.1.1. called and also spread in this country in recent weeks. The striking thing: the symptoms of the latest variant differ from the previous ones.
As the French newspaper “L’Indépendant” reports, those affected may experience diarrhea, heart rhythm disturbances and severe headaches. Experts fear that Cerberus will increase the number of cases in the winter, according to the newspaper.
Other symptoms of the variant include:
- general malaise
- Sore throat
- Cough
- flu-like symptoms
- muscle strain
- Sniffs
- difficulty breathing
- heart rhythm changes
Dominant in some regions of Switzerland
“This variant was responsible for 20 to 50 percent of the corona cases in Switzerland at the beginning of November,” BAG spokesperson Simon Ming told Blick. BQ.1.1 is now dominant in individual regions of Switzerland. Ming: “We assume that it will be the dominant variety throughout Switzerland in November.”
An increase is expected in winter. So far, there is no evidence of a bad course of the Cerberus infection, says Ming. However, corona is not the only infection that causes cold symptoms. In children, the RS virus causes full beds in hospitals. Influenza viruses could also spread more in winter, says Huldrych Günthard (61), an infectious disease specialist at the University Hospital of Zurich.
