“We are really disappointed,” Perrez said in an interview with the “Tamedia” newspapers about the results of the world climate conference in Egypt. “But at least we avoided a step backwards compared to Glasgow last year.” After all, the final document now requires states to phase out fossil fuels. “In Glasgow there was still talk of a goal. The position is now a bit stronger, but of course we are disappointed.”
The conference was unique in a negative sense. “The disagreement between industrialized countries and developing countries has never been stronger than at this conference,” Perrez said.
Given the mixed results of the world climate conferences, one wonders whether such major events do not complicate negotiations. “But these conferences create a steady point each year where states are under pressure to get results,” Perrez said. “The progress is small, but every tenth of a degree counts.” (SDA)
