South Korea and the United States have responded to North Korea’s ICBM test with a joint airstrike, the military said. The purpose of Friday’s show of force was to improve the possibilities for a possible strike against North Korean missile systems.
Both countries have demonstrated their willingness to respond “to all threats and provocations, including a North Korean ICBM,” the Joint General Staff said on Friday. The US has stationed 28,500 troops in South Korea as a deterrent against North Korea.
F35A stealth fighter jets of the South Korean Air Force were reportedly aimed at dropping laser-guided bombs that can be aimed at rocket launchers. Aircraft of the same type had also flown with US Air Force F-16 fighter jets in attack formation over the sea off the east coast.
A few hours earlier, North Korea fired another nuclear-powered missile eastward toward the open sea, which in theory could reach US territory. According to South Korea, it was an ICBM that flew about 1,000 kilometers at an altitude of up to 6,100 kilometers. After multiple missile tests by North Korea and the resumption of large-scale joint military exercises by South Korea and the US this year, tensions on the Korean peninsula have risen significantly.
