According to Dutch judges, the passenger plane with flight number MH17 and 298 occupants was clearly shot down over eastern Ukraine in 2014 with a Russian Buk anti-aircraft missile.

The missile was fired from a field in a separatist-controlled area. When the verdict was announced in the criminal proceedings against four people who were allegedly primarily responsible for the downing, the Dutch judge on Thursday confirmed investigations by international detectives for the first time. The anti-aircraft gun was therefore taken from a Russian military base to Ukraine and returned after being shot down.

Three former senior pro-Russian separatists have been found guilty of the downing. A fourth defendant was acquitted. The court announced the verdict on Thursday in the absence of the accused, the verdict was initially pending.

The court also noted that as of May 2014, the conflict zone in eastern Ukraine and the rebels were effectively under Russian control. Russia has so far denied any responsibility.

The Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 was shot down over a disputed territory in eastern Ukraine on July 17, 2014 while en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. All 298 people on board were killed. Since most of them came from the Netherlands, the trial will also take place there. (aeg/sda/dpa)
