On Tuesday evening, November 15, Donald Trump announced that he would run for president of the United States again in 2024. During the hour-long performance for his supporters in Mar-a-Lago, he apparently had an atypical “bit of energy,” several journalists in attendance reported. He said he spent much of his speech repeating the same phrases he used at his rallies — criticizing President Joe Biden’s approach, touting his own economic record and calling for electoral reform.
The speech seems to have been so boring that the fans even wanted to leave earlier. ABC News reporter Olivia Rubin posted a video of the Mar-a-Lago crowd on Twitter. She noted that a crowd formed at the exit of the ballroom and people tried to leave the room before Trump finished his speech. She added that “the security forces will not allow her.”
Rubin is not alone in her observation. Other journalists also claim to have observed the same thing.
Jon Karl, ABC News’ chief correspondent in Washington, also said he’s seen people try to leave in vain before. They probably wanted to prevent the room from emptying completely before the speech was over, he speculated.
Brennan Murphy, producer at The Recount, commented that it was the “most bored Trump crowd” he’s ever seen. Others, including Meghan McCain, also criticized Trump for his “boring” speech.
Kumar Rao, a lecturer at Columbia University Law School, asked if Trump was sick or “just weathered”. Rao added that “his voice, attitude and cadence are pretty damn low on energy.”

However, Michael Bender, a New York Times reporter, took a different view of the public’s reaction to Trump’s announcement. He wrote on Twitter that Trump held the audience’s attention during the 63-minute speech. He noted in his tweet that there were “some side talks” in the back of the room, but overall “most people were cheering and singing”. “Few, if any, left the room early,” Bender said. (lzo)
