The competent federal prosecutor in New York wrote to the competent court on Monday: no charges will be filed against the former mayor of New York. The investigation included whether the 78-year-old had illegally lobbied for Ukrainian customers.
Giuliani was also a central figure in Trump’s 2019 campaign aid from Ukraine, leading to the Republican’s first impeachment trial. The lawyer searched the Eastern European country for incriminating material against current US President Joe Biden, whose son Hunter had worked for the Ukrainian gas company Burisma.
In a famous phone call in 2019, Trump urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to launch investigations into the Bidens and Burisma. At the time, Biden was a promising candidate for US Democrats’ presidential candidacy — and thus a dangerous rival to Trump. The phone call led to the first impeachment proceedings against Trump in December 2019. The impeachment process ultimately failed in the US Senate.
Giuliani then made headlines again after Trump lost to Biden in the November 2020 presidential election. The lawyer and former prosecutor led the president-elect’s campaign against the election results.
For spreading a number of conspiracy theories, Giuliani was sued by a voting machine manufacturer for $1.3 billion in damages. He also lost his New York state attorney’s license. (sda/afp)
