Fierce battles for positions, but no progress according to Ukraine
Despite fierce fighting in Ukraine’s war zones, the situation remains static, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. There is currently less news from the combat zones, Selenskyj said in his daily video speech on Tuesday evening. “But that doesn’t mean the intensity of the fighting has diminished.” The situation is “still difficult”. Meanwhile, Zelenskyy’s generals reported new rocket and air strikes by the Russian army and further looting.
“In some areas, fierce battles for position continue,” Zelensky said. “And as before, it is especially difficult in the Donetsk region.” The order for the Russian troops to advance to the borders of the administrative area remains in force. But according to Selenskyj, “We’re not giving up an inch of our land there.”
Zelenskyj: Russia wants to use winter as a weapon
Outside the combat zones, intensive work is underway to normalize life in the liberated areas, Zelenskyj said. This is especially true for the restoration of gas and electricity supplies, for example in the vicinity of Kharkov. And to help the population through the coming winter period, the government has exempted imports of energy supply equipment – such as generators and transformers – from import duties.
Russia clearly intends to use it for its own purposes next winter. “We understand it clearly: turning winter into a weapon is the plan of a terrorist state against our state and against all of Europe,” Zelenskyy said. “But we are doing everything we can to ensure that this Russian plan fails, just like several previous ones.”

Kiev: Russia continues with missile strikes and looting
The Russian army attacked a number of targets in Ukraine on Tuesday. The Ukrainian General Staff said both missiles and warplanes were used in the attacks in the regions of Kharkiv, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhya and Kherson. “Critical infrastructure and homes continue to be attacked in violation of international humanitarian law and the rules of war,” the military wrote on Facebook. No further details were given about the concrete effects of the attacks.
Ukraine’s General Staff accused the authorities of neighboring Belarus of continuing to support Russian attacks on Ukrainian targets by providing “infrastructure, territory and airspace”. “There is still a risk that the enemy will launch air strikes with combat drones from the territory and airspace of this country.”
From the region around the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson, the general staff in Kiev reported ongoing organized looting by Russian soldiers. The day before, convoys carrying stolen household appliances and building materials had been observed. At the same time, the dismantling of cell towers and other telecommunications systems continues. Furthermore, “all the artifacts and even the furniture” were taken by the occupiers from the regional museum of the Soviet-Ukrainian painter Oleksiy Shovkunenko. The information provided by both combatants is often not independently verifiable.
Ukrainian ambassador still hopes for Leopard tanks
The new Ukrainian ambassador in Berlin continues his efforts to supply German Leopard tanks to his country. “I am hopeful that this will happen, because this war has to be won,” said Oleksii Makeiev on Tuesday evening in the “RTL Nachtjournal Spezial”. “Today our girls and boys need armored cars and battle tanks at the front.” Germany could play a leading role in this. “We hope that the coalition of the willing, the Western powers, will contribute to this.” He hopes for a quick decision as Ukraine needs the tanks to fend off the attackers. “The sooner that happens, the faster this war will be over.” (sda/dpa)
