Two Billion Dollar Jackpot

The record amount was broken: a winner managed to dust 2.04 billion dollars in the American lottery “Powerball”. That is 2.01 billion Swiss francs.

The Powerball lottery jackpot of about two billion dollars has fallen. The winning ticket was bought in the American state of California, the organizers announced on Tuesday. The lucky winner got all six numbers right. The odds of that happening were 1 in 292.2 million. By comparison, the risk of being struck by lightning in the United States is about one in a million.

The winning ticket was sold at Joe’s Service Center in Altadena, northeast of Los Angeles. The new billionaire doesn’t seem to know how lucky he is. He has not yet responded to the message spoken in his mailbox.

If the winner wants everything to be paid out in cash immediately, then by various deductions he will not get the total of $2.04 billion, but about $998 million. However, the winner could also opt for an annual payment of partial sums.

For months there was no winner

The jackpot has grown steadily since there was last a winner in early August. Over the past three months, the number of wins has increased.

The winning numbers drawn Tuesday morning at the Florida Lottery studio in Tallahassee were 10, 33, 41, 47 and 56, and the red Powerball was 10.

The figures should have been released on Monday, but there were delays for security reasons, CNN writes. Then it was said that there was no winner – before the winning ticket was announced in California. (jwg/SDA)
