Former US President Donald Trump (76) is fueling his party just hours before the midterms. According to the Washington Post, he caused a major, frantic mess in the Republican Party on Monday.
The ex-president had “threatened” to “endanger” the midterm elections by announcing his presidential candidacy in 2024, according to the newspaper. Trump has informed several confidants that he wants to announce his candidacy on the eve of the midterms.
«Big announcement on November 15»
Trump shared his plans with people close to him early Monday, according to the paper. He wanted to make his big appearance at the Ohio rally, which took place at 8 p.m. local time. But he doesn’t. Instead, he keeps his fans hopeful.
He announces jubilantly: “I will make my big announcement in Mar-a-Lago on November 15th.” He says now is not the right time. The focus should be on the midterm candidates.
Trump could let the Democrats vote
However, according to the Washington Post, it was an unpredictable decision. Because on Monday morning, some of his advisers started telling others that an effort should be made to talk him out of the announcement. Other Trump advisers are said to have urged him to make the announcement.
However, Republicans feared his announcement would harm the party. Because this could fuel Democrats’ turnout on Election Day.
Ex-president plans party and speech
Trump promised at a rally on Saturday that he would announce his decision “very, very, very soon.”
According to American media, he is expected to throw a big party in Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday evening. He is also planning a public appearance when the election results are available. (EU)
