Opposition party calls for new elections

“The lack of political legitimacy (of the current government) is the biggest threat to national security, so there is nothing left but free elections and strengthening the rule of law,” party secretary general Asar Mansuri tweeted Monday. The system must understand “the roots” of the protests and not try to cover them up with irrelevant excuses, the reform politician said.

The protests were triggered by the death of 22-year-old Iranian Kurd Mahsa Amini in mid-September. The vice squad arrested her for allegedly violating the Islamic dress code. The woman died in police custody on September 16.

Since her death, tens of thousands have demonstrated across the country against the repressive course of the government and Islamic rule system. More than 300 people have been killed – more than 14,000 arrested – since the protests began, according to human rights activists.
