Zelenskyy accuses Iran of lying
According to Kiev, the Iranian leadership has packed untruths in an official statement. After Tehran admitted to supplying combat drones to Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Iran of lying. “Even with this confession, they are lying,” the Ukrainian head of state said in his daily video message on Saturday. The number of Iranian combat drones shot down by Ukraine’s air defense system exceeds the “few” drones mentioned by Iran, Zelenskyj justified his accusation.
Iran had allowed drone deliveries to Russia for the first time on Saturday. Foreign Minister Hussein Amirabdollahian said the Islamic Republic has provided Russia with a limited number of drones ahead of the war in Ukraine, state news agency IRNA reported. However, the chief diplomat denied further arms deliveries after the start of the Russian war of aggression and the delivery of missiles.
The Ukrainian military says it has shot down hundreds of Iranian Shahed-136 kamikaze drones. “Eleven Shahed drones were shot down yesterday alone,” Zelenskyy said. The Ukrainian military leadership suspects that Russia has ordered 2,400 such drones, with which the Russian military has increasingly attacked Ukraine’s energy supply in recent times.
Scholz calls for a clear no to nuclear attacks from Russia
Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called on Russia to exclude the use of nuclear weapons in a war of aggression against Ukraine. “It is not allowed, it is unacceptable to use nuclear weapons in this conflict,” Scholz said Saturday at the SPD debate convention in Berlin. “We call on Russia to state clearly that it will not do this. That would be a border that should not be crossed.”
Scholz warned of a nuclear escalation during his visit to Beijing on Friday with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Scholz called Russia’s nuclear threats “irresponsible and very dangerous”. Xi said: “The use of nuclear weapons or the threat thereof must be rejected.”
Fierce fighting around Kherson
Ukrainian troops and Russian occupiers fought fiercely on Saturday around the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson. According to the Russian account, several front sections in the region came under heavy artillery fire. In some places, larger troop transfers and movements of Ukrainian armored units have been recorded. “Apparently, Ukrainian forces are preparing another attack,” the Russian-appointed deputy chief of administration of the occupied region, Kirill Stremusov, speculated.
The Ukrainian army had previously reported heavy fighting and artillery duels in the Kherson area. After initial successes, the Ukrainian leadership still wants to completely liberate the region in the south of the country.

Cooling systems at Zaporizhia NPP reconnected to the grid
The external power supply of the Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhya has been restored after a two-day interruption. Two lines were repaired on Saturday evening, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna. Although the Russian nuclear power plant is currently not operational, the facility still needs electricity to cool nuclear materials and prevent a nuclear accident.
The two lines were damaged after shelling in the Ukrainian-controlled area, about 60 kilometers from the nuclear power plant. Until the repair, the power supply of the largest European nuclear power plant was ensured with emergency generators, which have enough fuel for about 15 days.
Zelenskyj wants crowdfunding for naval drone fleet
After the surprise attack by Ukrainian naval drones on the Russian Black Sea Fleet in its naval port at Sevastopol in Crimea, Ukraine is looking to buy more of these weapons. “Next week we will start another fundraiser, we want to raise money for a whole fleet of naval drones,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced in his video address on Saturday night. The purpose of these drones is clear. “Everyone has already seen how it works.”
According to Ukrainian reports, three Russian warships were hit in the attack on Sevastopol last weekend, including the new flagship “Admiral Makarov”. The Russian military has admitted only some minor damage without providing more details. (sda/dpa)
