They were tape recordings of Donald Trump that briefly seemed to jeopardize his victory in the 2016 presidential election. He had made sexually derogatory statements about women. Not for the first time. His lawyers dismissed it as “locker room talk.” That’s what men talked about in the locker room when the women weren’t there. The fear at the time: Female voters, especially those in the major suburbs, could become Donald Trump’s Achilles heel.

That was a long time ago. Meanwhile, women in Trump’s “Make America Great Again” movement, or MAGA for short, have become his strongest weapon. He skillfully gives them space, shares his power with them and patronizes them. Among them are the two politicians Kari Lake and Majorie Taylor Greene, as well as the activist Candace Owens.

To participate in Trump’s power, the three form a kind of club of fiendish devils. Their main commonality: They are all spreading Trump’s lie about voter fraud. Their main goal: to trump Trump’s radicalism so that the grassroots remain happy. All of this helps Trump and makes them a danger to Democrats. The following check shows how much:

Kari Lake

Recent action: A scene from her Arizona campaign in late October illustrates why Kari Lake is so successful. Probably the Trumpists’ greatest political talent on a stage in Morristown, northwest of Phoenix, is performing at a rodeo event. Of her Democratic opponent in the run for governor there, she says, “Katie Hobbs believes there are 47 different genders.” The crowd cheers. A band plays while visitors marvel at the bull riders.

Lake exclaims, “I don’t have a biology degree, but there are two genders, people. Two!” To the cheers of the crowd, she continued, “Since this is the rodeo – Katie, I have a challenge for you: Katie Hobbs, why don’t you go out and try to milk a bull and tell me how?!” Perhaps the Democrat can be “reasonably enlightened,” Lake sneezes, shouting, “Send her out of here and let her milk a bull!”

The Republican, who is backed by Trump, is fully committed to the culture war against left-wing identity issues. They don’t care that there are very few transgenders. Not that they have to struggle with a lot of problems either. Lake stylizes it as the Democrats’ main theme and as a symbol for a world that would actually be very simple if leftists didn’t make it unnecessarily complicated.

She was once able to differentiate: “There are many young people who face this difficult dilemma and need support,” she wrote on Facebook in 2015. No one needs to be converted. “These people are just asking for a little understanding or support.” At the time, Lake was even considered a sort of “Queen of the Gays”.

Personal meeting: I first saw her live two days after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 at Orlando’s CPAC, an annual conservative political conference. She didn’t say a word about the war. The Kulturkampf “Wake up not awake” was more important to her. She set the room full of right-wing conservative Republicans against the journalists present. How well she can direct, control and change moods was an instructive experience.

Conclusion on the risk potential: Kari Lake’s rhetorical skills and charm rival those of Barack Obama. Her demagogic messages are those of a female Steve Bannon. That makes her Trump’s most dangerous campaigner. Maybe he’ll make her the runner-up for 2024. Lake is likely to win the Arizona gubernatorial election. So it has a direct influence on the counting of the electoral votes. Should Trump not get enough again by 2024, Lake would likely find as many as he needs. She leaves open whether she would accept defeat in Arizona.

Marjorie Taylor Greene

Recent action: With Halloween it was that time again. Marjorie Taylor Greene crossed borders and placed an election ad titled Stop Abuse. The US president is not subtly portrayed as a pedophile. Threatening music, horror movie look, scenes in which Joe Biden touches children on various occasions.

This is not some random Halloween product. There have been rumors for months about right-wing networks and QAnon conspiracy groups that Biden is touching little girls. This is how Taylor Greene uses the “pizzagate” conspiracy ideology well known in the US. It reads: A pedophile network operating out of a pizza parlor in Washington kidnaps, tortures and drinks the children’s blood.

In addition to Steve Bannon, Marjorie Taylor Greene also set up Trump supporters for the January 6 storming of the Capitol. She said phrases like: “This is our moment from 1776” or “We can’t let the transfer of power happen so ‘peacefully'”. She is therefore regarded as one of the main instigators of the violent insurgency.

Personal meeting: Marjorie Taylor Greene, abbreviated MTG, pops up everywhere she thinks her radical views could score. I have met her several times at anti-abortion demonstrations before the Supreme Court in Washington. My attempts to interview her were blocked by escorts, all of whom wore partings, beards and sunglasses. It was always rudely said, “America First”, no interviews with foreigners. In fact, the MTG team mainly wants to make its own propaganda films and avoid critical questions.

Conclusion on the risk potential: Few Republicans want to go further than Marjorie Taylor Greene. At the same time, few are as prominent as the signature Georgia blonde woman. So far, she has been considered a stark exception to the QAnon camp in the US Congress along with Lauren Boebert. If more supporters of conspiracy ideologies are elected to Congress in the midterm elections, their power could increase. Keeping MTG in check can be difficult for a future Republican Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy. Trump protects and encourages them.

Candace Owens

Recent action: Candace Owens has made a documentary titled “The Biggest Lie Ever Sold: George Floyd”. Held in a pseudo-neutral style, Owens sets out in search of the alleged truth. In summary, George Floyd, murdered by a police officer, is portrayed as a drug addict who has made a mess of his own life. Owens, on the other hand, sensitively follows up with the perpetrator Derek Chauvin, who was sentenced to 22.5 years in prison for assault resulting in bodily harm and wrongful death.

She discredits the media, black civil rights activists and politicians because they only want to make money with a lie. Owens recently defended the anti-Semite and rapper Kanye West when he spread the false claim that George Floyd died of an overdose of the drug fentanyl. She threatened to sue George Floyd’s family if they dared to take legal action against the lie.

Personal meeting: None, so far only in the digital space.

Conclusion on the risk potential: Candace Owens is not a candidate for the Trumpists. But as a black woman and publicist, she is an influential voice for them. On the one hand, it serves them as a fig leaf for racists. Their motto: A movement cannot be racist if black people are part of it. Owens, on the other hand, does have some influence in black communities. It represents a trend at Trump to target minorities. A record number of blacks participate in these midterms for the GOP. Owens is also considered a possible running mate for Trump in 2024.
