Star chef Alfons Schuhbeck on appeal: ‘Want to be able to understand the punishment’ North Korea renewed tests: Japan shoots down missile

After being jailed for three years and two months for tax evasion, German star chef Alfons Schuhbeck is appealing.

“Alfons Schuhbeck is guilty, but wants to be able to understand the sentence based on the written motivation of the sentence,” his lawyers said on Thursday via a spokesperson. Against this background, the 73-year-old asked his lawyers on Thursday – the last day of the deadline – to appeal the court’s verdict.

A spokesman for the Munich District Court confirmed to me that “a fax of appeal has been received”. The court of appeal is the Federal Court of Justice (BGH) in Karlsruhe, which must then review the decision of the regional court.

Schuhbeck left open in the message whether this would really happen: “Should the written reasons support the court’s decision, I will ask my lawyers to withdraw the appeal in case of doubt,” he said accordingly. “Until then, I will not slacken in my efforts to repair the damage as much as possible.”

Last Thursday, the Munich Regional Court sentenced I Schuhbeck to three years and two months in prison for tax evasion. Early release is no longer possible at such a level. According to the court, the prominent cook had smuggled around 2.3 million euros through the tax authorities. According to a spokeswoman, the Public Prosecution Service does not want to appeal against the ruling. (sda/dpa)
