Brazil protests: police arrest 37 Bolsonaro supporters 400,000 Russians allegedly fled mobilization – the night update without photos

Bolsonaro supporters do not want to accept defeat.

Police have arrested 37 supporters of the right-wing head of state over illegal roadblocks in protest at the election defeat of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

In addition, fines of 11.3 million reais (2.24 million Swiss francs) have been imposed, Justice Minister Anderson Torres said on Thursday. The police have lifted 864 roadblocks and blockades in recent days.

Since Monday, Bolsonaro’s supporters have blocked numerous major roads across the country in protest at the election victory of left-wing ex-president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Since most goods in Brazil are transported by truck, the National Confederation of Industry (CNI) warned of supply bottlenecks. According to the Association of Supermarkets, there have already been supply problems in some states, especially with fruits, vegetables and meat.

On Wednesday evening, Bolsonaro finally called on his supporters to lift the blockades. So far, Bolsonaro has not explicitly admitted his defeat, but has indicated that he does not want to stand in the way of the change of government. Key allies such as Vice President Hamilton Mourão and Speaker of Parliament Artur Lira have already recognized Lula’s victory. (aeg/sda/dpa)
