Hurricane ‘Lisa’ hits Belize coast: London cops jailed for 12 weeks for racist chats

Hurricane Lisa has made landfall in the Central American country of Belize. The tropical cyclone hit the coast near Belize City on Wednesday (local time) with sustained winds of up to 140 kilometers per hour, the US Hurricane Center NHC said.

Storm “Lisa” had developed across the Caribbean en route to the 400,000-population country into a hurricane of the lowest strength one in five. Shortly before arrival, authorities had set up emergency shelters and closed airports. People across the country have been urged to prepare for heavy rain, high winds and flooding.

A hurricane warning has been issued for the Bay Islands in Honduras, the entire coast of Belize and the stretch of coast between Chetumal and Costa Maya in southeastern Mexico. The effects of the storm were also felt in Guatemala. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. (saw/sda/dpa)
