US wants Iran expelled from UN Women’s Rights Commission This is the militant vegan currently causing a stir on social media

In response to the brutal suppression of protests in Iran, the US wants to expel the country from the UN Commission on Women’s Rights. US Vice President Kamala Harris said on Wednesday the US will work with its partners to remove Iran from the body. “The United States believes that no country that systematically ignores the rights of women and girls should play a role in any international or UN body charged with protecting those same rights.”said Harris.

Kamala Harris no longer wants to tolerate Iran in the women's rights commission.

Iran has “proven its unfitness for the work of this commission through its denial of women’s rights and brutal actions against its own people.” The mere presence of Iran discredits the integrity and work of the body.

Meanwhile, members of the UN Security Council discussed the situation in Iran in New York on Wednesday at the initiative of the US. US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield pledged her full support for women in Iran. However, the path will not be easy: “Change will not come overnight.” But the current situation in Iran is important for women worldwide. “Women count on us to do the right thing.”

The trigger for the systemic mass protests in Iran was the death of 22-year-old Iranian Kurd Mahsa Amini. The vice squad arrested her for allegedly violating the Islamic dress code. The woman died in police custody in mid-September. Tens of thousands of people have been demonstrating for more than six weeks against the Islamic Republic’s repressive policies and authoritarian course. More than 280 people were killed and more than 14,000 arrested, according to human rights activists. (saw/sda/dpa)
