Nazi photo of Italy’s new secretary of state sparks a stir Emerald salvaged from shipwreck to be auctioned in New York

In Italy, an old photo of a designated secretary of state of the new right-wing government wearing a swastika bracelet caused a stir.

The photo shows politician Galeazzo Bignami of the far-right ruling party Fratelli d’Italia in a black shirt and red armband. The recording was allegedly made during a bachelor party in 2005, various media reported on Tuesday. Fratelli boss and prime minister Giorgia Meloni wants to make the 47-year-old secretary of state at the Ministry of Infrastructure led by Lega boss Matteo Salvini. The swearing in of the state secretaries is scheduled for Wednesday.

According to reports from various media, the photo was already doing the rounds in 2016. Bignami said Monday that he was ashamed of the confession. But it was absurd to republish almost 20-year-old private photos, for which he had apologized several times. (aeg/sda/dpa)
