Two suicide bombers detonated two car bombs on Saturday outside the Ministry of Education in the center of the capital Mogadishu. The Islamist terrorist militia Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the crime. The attack is the deadliest terrorist attack in the country in about five years.
Al-Shabaab controls large parts of central and southern Somalia. However, for several months now, the government in Mogadishu has been cracking down on the extremists in the country with the support of armed clans. Recently, the Somali army has been able to capture large amounts of territory.
Al-Shabaab has since changed its strategy, experts say, and is once again relying more and more on terrorist attacks. Last weekend, a three-day government conference to step up the fight against terrorism ended. The militia also wants to break the military offensive with attacks on selected clan elders.
