Congo expels ambassador to Rwanda
The Congolese government is expelling the Rwandan ambassador in retaliation for Rwanda’s alleged support for the M23 rebels in eastern DRC. The ambassador has 48 hours to leave the country.
Yesterday the Kiwanja in eastern Congo was taken by the M23 rebels and Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, was virtually cut off from the upper half of the province.
Four members of the UN mission Monusco, which provides military support to Congolese government troops, were injured in the fighting in Goma.
Total war
Eyewitnesses told Reuters that they saw a massive influx of Rwandan forces in support of the M23 rebels. The Rwandan government denies supporting the rebel group, which once worked to protect members of the Tutsi community from Hutu militias.
Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi has warned that tensions could escalate into all-out war if Rwanda’s “provocations” continue.
It has been restless in eastern Congo for years. Several militias are fighting each other and the Congolese authorities for control of mines and raw materials in the region. Congo regularly accuses neighboring countries Rwanda and Uganda of supporting militias.
