The husband of prominent American politician Nancy Pelosi was attacked at the couple’s San Francisco home. According to US media reports, it involved a targeted attack on her home. The attacker said several times on Friday night: “Where is Nancy?” called, the “New York Times” and the “Washington Post” wrote, citing officials.
Paul Pelosi, 82, is in hospital and “expected to make a full recovery,” a spokesman said. The Speaker of the US House of Representatives, protected by bodyguards, was out of town at the time of the attack.
The San Francisco Police Department initially did not comment on the reports and did not allow questions at a brief press conference. Officers drove to the Pelosis’s home around 2:30 a.m., Police Chief William Scott said. When they arrived, the man hit Pelosi with the hammer in front of the police officers. The attacker has been arrested and the motive for the attack is under investigation.
CNN reported that Paul Pelosi himself called 911 on his phone. He could not immediately report the attack, but the employee of the emergency center heard what was happening in the background and sent the police.
Democrat Pelosi is a frequent target of verbal attacks from the American political right. Ex-President Donald Trump continues to call her “Crazy Nancy”. As Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Pelosi ranks high in the American political hierarchy. (sda/dpa)
