The UN chief emphasized the “principle of inviolability” of diplomatic and consular institutions and their staff, which must always be observed in accordance with international law, as the United Nations announced in New York on Tuesday. Guterres also called on all those involved to exercise the utmost restraint. In this already volatile region, any miscalculation could lead to a wider conflict with devastating consequences, especially for civilians, the UN chief warned.

On Monday, two brigade generals and five other members of Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) were killed in an airstrike on the grounds of the Iranian embassy in the Syrian capital Damascus. The IRGC is Iran’s elite military force and is considered more powerful than conventional forces. Iran strongly condemned the attack and threatened its arch-enemy Israel with retaliation. When asked, an Israeli military spokesman said he did not comment on reports in foreign media. (sda/dpa)
