Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (74) must undergo surgery. During a routine examination on Saturday, the 74-year-old was diagnosed with a hernia, Netanyahu’s office said on Sunday. According to the information, the procedure is performed under general anesthesia. Justice Minister Jariv Levin, who is also deputy prime minister, will now take over the duties of head of government. A meeting of the war cabinet was scheduled for Sunday evening.
Netanyahu’s office did not provide any information about exactly which hernia the prime minister was diagnosed with. The most common hernia is the so-called inguinal hernia. Most patients can leave the hospital quickly after hernia surgery and can move normally again after a few days or weeks. For example, with a hernia, parts of the intestine, parts of organs or fatty tissue protrude through an opening in the abdominal wall.
Netanyahu has been hospitalized several times in the past due to health problems. He had a pacemaker placed last summer. (SDA)
