A package with explosive contents was placed in this building.

A package containing explosives was left behind at a meeting of the religious community of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Austria. On Saturday it turned out that this ‘could possibly have caused major damage’, the police reported. The service took place on Friday evening in Kalsdorf, south of Graz. About 50 visitors were present.

The package was discovered in the entrance area of the building. Police arrived, cordoned off the area and found the package. The operation lasted all night because explosives experts feared danger and could only move the package with extreme caution. After detailed investigation, a police spokesman said on Saturday: “It is an unconventional, homemade, but fundamentally functional explosive.”

According to the police, the state security service was investigating. Information about possible perpetrators or the background of the incident on Saturday was lacking. Last year there were already two explosion incidents at facilities of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Austria. (SDA)
