The videos circulating on Platform X are brutal. They show a woman being dragged from the back of a police car by an angry mob and then punched and kicked without restraint. The police only intervene when the woman lies completely still on the ground and the crowd around her thins. According to the Mexican daily El Universal, she died on the way to the hospital.
The crime took place in Taxco in the state of Guerrero in southern Mexico. The reason for this is the kidnapping and death of an 8-year-old girl.
This had happened before
The girl Camila Gomez went to play with her best friend and neighbor early Wednesday afternoon. A short time later, the mother received calls from unknown numbers demanding 250,000 pesos (the equivalent of 13,600 francs) for her daughter’s release. When she then went to her neighbor to ask about her daughter, she assured her that the girl had never arrived.
The body of the 8-year-old girl was found in a black bag on the highway on Thursday morning. The main suspects: the neighbors.

It wasn’t long before a security camera video circulating on social media showed the girl entering the neighboring house. The burden of proof was made even more difficult by a second video: It shows the neighbor carrying a basket full of clothes from her house to a car, which later turned out to be a taxi. Shortly afterwards, a man – the taxi driver – follows her, carrying what appears to be a heavy black bag over his shoulder. After loading the car, they drive away.
After viewing the video footage, the taxi driver was arrested. According to El Universal, he was the one who revealed the location of Camila’s body.
The mafia practices willfulness
In Taxco there was so much anger about the incident that dozens of people gathered for a demonstration on Thursday afternoon. They gathered, among other things, in front of a neighbor’s house to demand her arrest. As the Mexican newspaper El País reports, the officers did not yet have an arrest warrant and therefore could not make any arrests. The situation then escalated and the demonstrators gained access to the house. They forcibly pulled out the neighbor, her partner and her son and beat them.

Meanwhile, the police managed to get the three people under control, put them in the back of their police car and drove away. However, it didn’t take long for the angry mob to regain control of the three people – with half-hearted police intervention.
The crowd only let go of the woman when she stopped moving. While she died from her injuries a short time later, her partner and son were seriously injured in hospital.
The tourist town of Taxco has long suffered from high levels of crime, especially organized crime. In January the city was completely paralyzed by two criminal groups. Out of fear, transport services were suspended and the school and several shops remained closed. Lynchings in Mexico are not uncommon. The reason for this is the high level of impunity and distrust of state institutions in the Latin American country. (saw)
