Joe Davies longed to make a name for himself.

As a child, Joe Davies (36) dreamed of becoming a rock star. Climb into the guild of the rich and famous with your own band. Instead, the Brit ended up in a dead end for years. He had jettisoned his original plan to study at a university. He was tired of learning. He wanted to make money. He helped out on construction sites or got behind the wheel as a delivery person. But he didn’t make much money from it.

Davies hit his personal low point when he flipped burgers on a grill at McDonald’s. “I hated it because I felt like I wasn’t doing anything important,” he told Britain’s Mirror newspaper. It was clear to him: something had to change – radically.

Heard about SEO for the first time

So he tried himself again. He was taken on as an IT apprentice for £100 a week (about R115). At that time, electronic commerce was flourishing. Davies sensed his opportunity. “In the company where I worked, I was asked to create a website and I learned about SEO.”

He had never heard of this word before. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) makes it easier for users to find your own website through search engines such as Google. Davies learned to make money from it. With his childhood friend Joe Taylor, the idea matured to develop a system to achieve excellent SEO results for clients.

He worked up to 13 hours a day

The two quit their jobs in 2013. It was the start of a company worth $11 million. “We accidentally created this great solution: a service platform for agencies to outsource SEO services, which even my old agency uses today.”

But the beginning was tough. “Joe and I worked 13 hours a day to get everything done,” says Davies. They increased their turnover with the first employee. Three people quickly formed a large team of specialists and authors.

By 2024, the company will serve 1,000 agencies with 100 employees worldwide. Joe Davis now wants to help other people and share his experiences. The most important qualities to be successful as an aspiring entrepreneur are: personal drive, curiosity and the burning desire to make money. «Don’t think too far ahead, because plans can change. There is no fate,” advises Davies. And: “It’s about hard work and seeing where it takes you.” (sam)
