At the Ballermann in Mallorca – every year the Spanish island is flooded with German and British tourists. The fact that these have repeatedly caused problems recently is confirmed by the fire in the bar “Why Not Mallorca” on May 20, 2022. The thatched roof of the bar caught fire. The young men, aged between 24 and 28, are said to have thrown cigarette butts from their hotel rooms to the bar downstairs. The material damage is reported to amount to 150,000 euros (over 147,000 francs). The bar and a brothel on the ground floor were hit.
Instead of four days of partying, there were 56 days in jail. To free the thirteen men, their families had to pay a bail of 12,000 euros (more than 11,500 francs) and deposit 500,000 euros (490,000 francs). But the Kegel brothers still protest their innocence to this day. Eight men were only allowed to return home after 56 days in prison. The interrogation protocols of the men now provide a more detailed insight into the crime, ‘Bild’ reports.

Her two rooms, 1204 and 1205, in the “whala!beach” hotel were too far away for her cigarette butts to reach the roof. To do this they would have had to at least be in room 1202, wherever they were, but only after the fire. Three of the men went to the balcony, but only briefly to get a closer look at the fire. “I wasn’t there for more than 30 seconds,” one of the defendants allegedly said, according to the interrogation transcript.
But four of the bowling brothers admit to smoking. “That was the first cigarette of my life,” one of the defendants allegedly said, according to the minutes. But his stump landed on the terrace below his room. Another of the four smokers is said to have extinguished his cigarette in a glass of water, while the third is said to have extinguished his cigarette with his foot. The fourth also threw his punch, but it ended up on the street, “far away from the bar that caught fire,” as he says.
The fourth smoker is particularly interesting for the researchers. This is due to a WhatsApp message he allegedly sent to one of the bowling brothers, only to delete it shortly afterwards. As the interrogation protocol shows, the man is said to have written after the fire: “It could only have been the two Germans from the corner terrace.” But after his bad conscience got the better of him, he deleted the message again. He thought it was wrong to say such things ‘when you are not sure’. Everyone has now arrived back in Germany. It is not yet known when they will be tried in Spain. (mgf)
