New rule causes unrest in the holiday paradise: Italy rages because of drinking water showers on beaches

Beach showers in Italy, such as here in Ostia near Rome, must now be operated with drinking water.

Lie on the beach, sunbathe, swim, relax and shower. Shower? When you think about going to the beach, the last shower is probably not the first thing that comes to mind. Yet it is part of life, also for Italians. However, they are currently outraged: as SRF reports, a new regulation now requires that only drinking water flows from the showers into the bathroom. There is currently a shortage of good quality water in Italy.

In some parts of the boot there have been beach showers from which drinking water flows for a long time. In Emilia-Romagna, for example, there are no set rules yet regarding the quality of shower water. In many other regions the water came from private wells: good water, just not drinkable. But now the rule applies to everyone. Operators of more remote pools in particular are facing a problem: as “Il Messaggero” reported, beach pool operators are “in a race against time to set up showers with drinking water by summer.”

There is hardly any good quality water available

So far no one has reported any problems with the beach showers, so it is unclear where the arrangement comes from. The seaside resorts in Italy are generally operated “a pagamento”. The following applies: You pay the entrance fee, but you get a sun lounger, a changing area and a parasol all to yourself.

It seems an absurd arrangement, given that Italy is struggling with a shortage of good quality drinking water. However, it is likely that it will join the already long line of decrees awaiting implementation. We are currently waiting for all beach permits to be retendered or for all municipalities in Italy to treat their waste water before discharging it into the sea. (Unpleasant)
