According to consistent media reports, Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar wants to resign. The 45-year-old will also resign as head of the Fine Gael party, broadcaster RTÉ and the newspapers “Irish Independent” and “Irish Times” said on Wednesday. Public Expenditure Minister Paschal Donohoe and Trade Minister Simon Coveney were discussed as successor candidates. However, it was assumed that early parliamentary elections would not be necessary.
The cabinet met on Wednesday morning for the first time since the crushing defeat in two referenda on the role of families. A majority of people in the EU country rejected constitutional changes aimed at modernizing wording on women’s role in the home and family. The government found the passages outdated and sexist and recommended the changes.
Meeting with Biden last week
The liberal-bourgeois party Fine Gael has governed in a coalition with the liberal-conservative party Fianna Fail since 2020. Chairman Michéal Martin replaced Varadkar as head of government halfway through the legislature. The aim of the two popular parties was to use the arrangement to prevent the Irish republican party Sinn Fein, previously considered the political arm of the terrorist group IRA, from participating in government.
Last week, Varadkar traditionally traveled to the US for Ireland’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and met President Joe Biden. He already held several government positions, but emphasized that he wanted to retire at the age of 50. (SDA)
