Many young people consider a healthy work-life balance to be their top priority. Family, friends and free time: all this must be compatible with your work. Not so for Jason*. The 22-year-old lives on the west coast of the United States and currently works two jobs at the same time.

“I wanted to increase my salary,” the programmer told Business Insider. He originally earned about $75,000 (almost R66,600) a year from his 100 percent job. The young man worked only 10 to 15 hours a week because he could usually complete his work quickly in the home office. Sufficient capacity for a second job. At first, the young man doubted whether he wanted to earn extra money with part-time jobs. Ultimately, he decided to take a second full-time job. “I felt like my workload in my first job was low enough and I knew that if I couldn’t handle it, I could just quit one of the two jobs.”

He uses these tricks to disguise his jobs

The programmer now earns $144,000 (about R127,800) for about 20 to 30 hours a week. From the comfort of your own home. His two bosses know nothing about the double employment. As Jason reveals to “Business Insider,” he uses a number of tricks to disguise his two jobs. “Where possible, I try to appear a little incompetent so that my colleagues are more understanding when I take a moment to complete a task. And so that they don’t give me too many difficult tasks.”

He also indicates that the processing of certain orders takes longer than he actually needs. In the extra time he could focus on his other job. He also founded his own company in December 2023.

For some there is a reporting obligation

Working two jobs at the same time is not itself illegal in the United States. However, this may conflict with current employment contracts. This usually contains a clause that obliges the employee to report dual employment to the employer.

In Switzerland it is also allowed to have multiple jobs at the same time. However, this only applies if the work does not violate the duty of loyalty to the employer. It is prohibited to also be employed by competitors. Furthermore, additional employment must not affect the contractual obligations at the relevant workplaces and must not violate general labor law. This also includes working and rest times. (mgf)
