Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is on trial for falsifying vaccination certificates during the corona pandemic.
The federal police accuse the former head of state (2019-2022) of forming a criminal organization and entering false data into the South American country’s vaccination database, as news portal G1 reported on Tuesday. Now the Public Prosecution Service must decide whether to file charges or stop the investigation.
The police are investigating a total of 17 suspects. They allegedly entered false corona vaccination data into the database. According to media reports, the vaccination records of Bolsonaro, his daughter Laura and his former assistant Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, among others, have been falsified. This made it possible to issue vaccination certificates to people who were not actually vaccinated and to circumvent travel restrictions in Brazil and the US, for example. Bolsonaro had repeatedly cast doubt on the danger of the coronavirus and the effectiveness of vaccinations during the pandemic.
The right-wing ex-president is currently being investigated in a number of cases. Police also accuse him of plotting a coup with allies to stay in power after his October 2022 election defeat by current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. (saw/sda/dpa)
