Donald Trump (77) seems loose these days. The former American president is already bringing out the big guns in the election campaign. The Republican is not above causing one scandal after another.
On Saturday, Trump threatened a “bloodbath” if he lost the presidential election in November. The campaign team of incumbent President Joe Biden (81), who wants to be re-elected in the fall, saw the statement as a call for political violence. Trump’s campaign team disputed that the “carnage” statement referred to the American auto industry.
With these punishments, Trump is causing a scandal
Trump’s next verbal derailment came Tuesday. He targeted Jewish Democratic voters, accusing them of “hating Israel.” In an interview with right-wing hardliner Sebastian Gorka (53), who once advised Trump, Trump responded to a statement by the Democratic majority leader in the US Senate, Chuck Schumer (73). Schumer had sharply criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (74) and called on the country to hold new elections.
“I think they hate Israel,” Trump said of the Democratic Party, suggesting Democrats are seeking votes from American opponents of Israel’s campaign in the Gaza Strip. Trump then dropped the sentences that earned him a wave of criticism: “Every Jewish person who votes for Democrats hates their religion. They hate everything about Israel and should be ashamed because Israel will be destroyed.”
Trump is unpopular among Jews
Biden’s campaign team responded promptly in the Washington Post. “The only person who should be ashamed is Donald Trump,” a Biden spokesperson made clear. The White House condemned the derailment as “abhorrent and disturbing anti-Semitism.” Spokesman Andrew Bates, however, did not mention Trump by name.
The Anti-Defamation League, a human rights organization that campaigns against the defamation of Jews in the United States, was shocked by Trump’s statement. “It is derogatory and fundamentally wrong to assume that Jews hate their religion just because they vote for a certain party,” said chairman Jonathan Greenblatt (53).
Jewish voters in the US clearly lean toward the Democrats. Last month, a poll found that 79 percent of American Jews have an unfavorable opinion of Donald Trump. Biden, on the other hand, was viewed positively by 62 percent of respondents.
