Imprisoned Iranian rapper Tumaj Salehi has been acquitted of further charges against him. Human rights organization HRANA reported this on Monday, referring to a court in the megacity of Isfahan.

His lawyer also confirmed the decision on the online platform X (formerly Twitter). The prosecutor also accused him of “spreading false information” and “incitement to violence” after Salehi reported in a video that he had been tortured in custody. The procedure previously received a lot of attention on social media.

The well-known rapper was sentenced to one year in prison and two years of re-education courses in early January. The judiciary had accused Salehi of “propaganda against the state”.

He was arrested during the wave of protests in autumn 2022 and sentenced to six years in prison at the time after showing early solidarity with demonstrators protesting against the government’s repressive course and the Islamic rule system.

Last November, Salehi was unexpectedly released on bail. After his release it was said that he could hope for a pardon. However, a short time later he was imprisoned again due to the allegations in the torture video. In the past, the rapper had repeatedly exposed social and political grievances in Iran with his critical lyrics. (sda/dpa)
