According to Russian sources, Ukraine attacked a polling station in the Russian-occupied part of Ukraine’s Zaporizhia region with drones early on Sunday morning. The municipal cultural center in the small town of Kamyanka-Dniprovska caught fire during the attack, Russian politician Vladimir Rogov, chairman of the “We are with Russia” movement, wrote on his Telegram channel.
Emergency Situations Ministry officials were unable to launch firefighting operations as drone attacks continued. There were no injuries. Ukraine is also attacking Russia with drones and missiles during the ongoing presidential election.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Russia repelled a total of 34 Ukrainian drone attacks on election Sunday night, including 16 in the Krasnodar region in the south of the country alone. An oil refinery there was attacked. A fire was quickly extinguished. One person died of a heart attack. The refinery workers were evacuated.
Drones were also reported shot down in Belgorod, Kaluga and Kursk, among others. Belgorod regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said the attack left about a dozen settlements without electricity. Buildings and gas pipes were damaged. A ballistic missile was fired over the Bryansk region.
Four drones were reportedly shot down over Moscow on election Sunday. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin wrote on his Telegram channel that air defenses had shot down two drones over the Domodedovo district, where the capital’s airport is also located. One drone was repelled in each of the Ramenskoye and Stupino districts. No injuries or damage were recorded.
Initially, it was not possible to independently verify whether all drones could actually be repelled on approach. The Russian side, which has been waging a war of aggression against its neighbor for more than two years, often only reports alleged successes of its own air defense in the event of Ukrainian drone attacks.
To defend against the Russian invasion, Ukraine repeatedly shells Russian territory – both in the border region and in the hinterland. However, the number of victims and damage is disproportionate to the serious consequences of the war in Ukraine. Sunday is the third and final day of the vote, which has come amid accusations of rigging and is aimed at securing Vladimir Putin a fifth term in office until 2030. (sda/dpa)
