Climate activists arrested after Vermeer attack

Three climate activists have been arrested in the Mauritshuis in the Netherlands after a violent attack on a painting by Johannes Vermeer. The police in The Hague reported this on Twitter on Thursday.

According to the museum, the target of the attack was the world-famous painting by the Dutch master “The Girl with a Pearl Earring” (1665-1667). According to the Maruitshuis there was no damage. Some rooms of the museum are closed, police said.

In a video circulating on Twitter, two men can be seen near the painting. One of them stuck his head to the glass in front of the painting and a red liquid was poured over him. The other man had his hand taped to the wall next to the photo.

Museums in several countries have recently been rocked by similar attacks on works of art. Demonstrators want to draw attention to climate change with their actions and urge more decisive action. (cpf/sda/dpa)
