A new volcanic eruption began on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula on Saturday evening. The last major eruption was almost three months ago. At that time the village of Grindavik had to be evacuated.
Now it’s cooking again in the same place! It is currently unclear whether the new outbreak will have major consequences.
Seventh eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula in three years
The Icelandic Meteorological Agency reported: “Increased seismic activity between Hagafell and Stóra-Scógfell. The seismic activity, together with land changes, could indicate that the magma flow is starting and that the chance of a volcanic eruption is now higher.” A minute later, the volcano erupted, Icelandic broadcaster RUV reported.
Images on social media showed a widening crack from which liquid rock flowed. It is the seventh eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula in three years. (no)
