Police say a man in the US shot three people and then barricaded himself in a house with several hostages. The shots were fired Saturday morning at two different locations in the Philadelphia suburb of Falls Township, police and prosecutors said at a joint news conference Saturday. The victims came from the shooter’s family environment. According to the information, the alleged perpetrator then fled in a stolen car and eventually barricaded himself in Trenton in the neighboring state of New Jersey with several hostages. Hours after the morning’s attacks, police tried to get the man to surrender.
According to police, the suspected perpetrator is a 26-year-old man who was recently homeless. He used an AR-15 assault rifle as the murder weapon. In addition to the fatalities, there were other family members at the crime scene, including minors. Authorities in Falls Township urged residents Saturday morning to seek safety. There was actually going to be a parade in the city to mark Ireland’s St. Patrick’s Day. According to local TV channel Fox29, it was canceled for safety reasons. The celebrations in honor of Saint Patrick also brought Irish emigrants to the US. (sda/dpa)
