Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harrissaid this Friday that “no one should go to jail for smoking marijuana” and described current federal restrictions on the drug as “absurd.”
Harris made the comments during an event at White Houseaccompanied by a rapper fat joewho advocated for the decriminalization of marijuana, and surrounded by several people who were pardoned by the US president, Joe Bidenfor possession convictions cannabis.
“Marijuana is considered as dangerous as heroin and more dangerous than fentanyl, which is absurd, not to mention blatantly unfair,” Harris said.
His statements come at a time when expectations are growing about the possibility that he will US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) change the current classification of marijuana, which is considered as addictive as LSD or heroin.
He US Department of Health last year recommended that cannabis no longer be classified in the category known as “List I”which includes substances with no acceptable medical use, and will become part of “list III”, which indicates a level of lower danger.
The final decision now rests with the DEA, although it is not known when that might happen.
The current “Schedule I” classification of marijuana, considered a highly dangerous substance, has resulted in harsher penalties for those who use or sell it, which has actually led to the disproportionate incarceration of Hispanics and Hispanics and Hispanic minorities.
Biden, who is running for re-election in the November election, is trying to attract the young vote, which mostly advocates decriminalization of marijuana.
Currently, its recreational use is legal 24 countries and in the District of Columbia, the seat of the capital Washington. Except, 38 out of 50 states allow its medical use.
However, it remains completely illegal in some states and at the federal level.
