Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas has appointed economist and former high-ranking government official Muhammad Mustafa (69) as the new prime minister. A corresponding statement from the Palestinian news agency Wafa said: “The President instructs Dr. Mohamed Mustafa with the formation of the 19th government.”
As “Sky News Arabia” reports, Mustafa is respected by many international stakeholders. He holds a doctorate in business administration and economics from George Washington University. He also worked at the World Bank for fifteen years.
“New agreement” necessary
Shtayyeh served as prime minister of the PA, which rules the occupied West Bank, from 2019 to 2024. However, at the end of February he announced that his government would resign. He stressed that “new agreements” are needed to address the “emerging reality in the Gaza Strip.”
Abbas accepted the decision. Since the October 7 riots, he has been under significant pressure to reform the PA so he can govern the Gaza Strip after the war ends. But even then it can be difficult. Because Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly spoken out strongly against the transfer of the Gaza Strip and against a two-state solution. (Mrs)
