Bitcoin is currently jumping from record to record. But who actually invented the oldest cryptocurrency? Who is behind the pseudonym “Satoshi Nakamoto” remains a secret for the time being.
According to a British court, an Australian entrepreneur is not the founder of the cryptocurrency Bitcoin, which operates under the pseudonym ‘Satoshi Nakamoto’. A judge at the High Court in London said this on Thursday, the PA news agency reports. Entrepreneur Craig Wright claimed he was “Satoshi.” He was sued for this by the Crypto Open Patent Alliance (Copa).
The foundation stone for Bitcoin was laid in 2008. An individual or group published an article under the name ‘Satoshi Nakamoto’ describing the principles for autonomous digital money. “Satoshi” communicated only electronically with his early colleagues before retiring after a few years.
There has been repeated speculation about the identity of the person or persons. In 2016, Wright declared himself “Satoshi Nakamoto” and wanted to back up this claim with the inventor’s crypto key. But experts quickly expressed their doubts. The judge in Great Britain now stated that Wright was not behind the pseudonym. A written ruling will be published at a later date.
Bitcoin is a decentralized digital currency that does not require a central bank or custodian. The transactions are processed via a publicly visible, non-manipulatable database (“blockchain”). (sda/awp/dpa/lyn)
