In the city of Chilpancingo, protesters threw firebombs at the office of the attorney general of Guerrero and set fire to 11 vehicles, the office said Tuesday. Four police officers were injured.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador had earlier announced that a police officer who allegedly shot a 23-year-old Ayotzinapa teacher training student had escaped from administrative detention.
43 young men kidnapped by police and handed over to a drug cartel almost a decade ago were also studying at Ayotzinapa University. The students have been missing since then. The case caused national and international outrage. Bone parts from only three of the victims were found and identified.
After the fatal shooting last week, police officers falsely claimed the shot student was driving a stolen vehicle laced with drugs and shot first, authorities said. (sda/dpa)
