The Chinese technology group Xiaomi wants to start selling its first self-developed electric car in March. Company founder Lei Jun mentioned Tuesday, March 28, 2024 as the launch date for the SU7 sedan on the social network Weibo. The price will also be announced then.
According to Jun, people who make quick decisions in China should be able to get in and drive away immediately. It is unknown how many vehicles will be in stock at launch. The company has previously said it wants to produce 200,000 cars a year.
Xiaomi previously showed specifications and images, but the specific launch date was not yet known.
Xiaomi shares then rose significantly on the Hong Kong stock exchange. Xiaomi, best known in China for smartphones and other electric devices, announced its entry into the electric car market three years ago and began developing its own vehicle. The SU7, which is produced jointly with Chinese carmaker BAIC, was unveiled in December.
The SU7 is intended to compete with top models such as the Tesla Model S or the Porsche Taycan.

The specifications of the two variants
SU stands for Speed Ultra – the car will be available in two versions:
- The SU7 has rear-wheel drive and a power of 222 kW, accelerates from 0 to 100 in 5.28 seconds and reaches a top speed of 210 km/h. The range is given as 670 kilometers.
- The SU7 Max has two engines and four-wheel drive. It must have a power of almost 500 kilowatts, accelerate from 0 to 100 in 2.78 seconds and have a top speed of 265 km/h. The performance version should reach 200 km/h in 10.67 seconds. A slightly improved range is listed at 500 miles.
Xiaomi uses an 800-volt system for the battery that allows fast charging. According to the manufacturer, enough electricity can be charged for 220 kilometers in 5 minutes.
Apple has failed with electric cars
It was recently announced that iPhone company Apple had stopped working on its own electric car after ten years of development. Apple is said to have wasted more than $10 billion.
China is the world’s most important market for electric cars and is therefore very competitive. Chinese car manufacturer BYD and American company Tesla are competing for market leadership.
