In 2023, the number of anti-Semitic incidents in German-speaking and Italian-speaking Switzerland skyrocketed. According to the latest anti-Semitism report, incidents in this country have increased especially after the October 7 terrorist attacks.

A total of 1,130 anti-Semitic incidents were reported or observed in 2023, compared to 910 in the previous year, as the Swiss Association of Jewish Communities (SIG) and the Foundation against Racism and Anti-Semitism (GRA) announced on Tuesday.

According to the SIG, the terrorist attacks by the radical Islamic Hamas in October 2023 were a "trigger" for the increase in such incidents. Of the ten recorded attacks against Jewish people, seven occurred after the terrorist attacks. After this date, 114 of the 155 real-world incidents were recorded.

Anti-Semitic incidents also increased in the digital world after the event, although they increased only slightly compared to the year before. 459 of the 975 occurred after October 7. (pre/sda)
