Anyone who sees a turtle while snorkeling or diving is a happy tourist. It’s different on Zanzibar (East Africa): here the animals like to end up on the table. Turtles are considered a delicacy. However, authorities warn against consumption. Not out of love for animals, but because food poisoning occurs again and again and can be fatal.

Just on Saturday, authorities on Pemba Island in the Zanzibar archipelago announced that one adult and eight children had died after eating turtle meat.

The disaster management team has been deployed

78 people were taken to the hospital, as The Associated Press reported. Among the dead are a mother and her child. They are said to have consumed the turtle meat on Tuesday. Authorities said a laboratory analysis showed all the people had eaten turtle meat.

In response to the incident, Zanzibar authorities deployed a disaster management team to educate the public about the dangers of consuming sea turtle meat. Deaths from eating sea turtle meat had occurred as early as November 2021. (ymh)
