The comedy show “Saturday Night Live” (SNL) is as much a part of Americans’ daily lives as apple pie and ice cream. Politicians are also regularly laughed at. This week, the creators of SNL didn’t have to worry long about who would be chosen for the political sketch: Katie Britt, a Republican senator from the state of Alabama, simply couldn’t be ignored.
Britt is considered a rising star in the Grand Old Party (GOP). She can tick off all the boxes that are currently relevant to Republicans: mother, conservative, married to a former football star – and unconditionally loyal to Trump. Therefore, she is even considered a possible candidate for the office of vice president.
Since last Thursday, however, their chances have probably diminished considerably. Britt was chosen to give the counter-speech to Joe Biden’s ‘State of the Union’ speech. At first glance, the elections seemed like a staged affair: women versus men, young versus old, conservative versus progressive. What could go wrong?
Actually everything. Britt’s performance scores a solid ten on the foreign embarrassment scale – or cringe, as the youngsters like to say. She gave her speech mainly in the kitchen, making it clear to women that they still belonged at the stove. She read her MAGA message in the voice of an affected girl and allegedly failed her audition for a school theater. And in the end, she made factual errors that were quickly refuted. Her actions even horrified GOP race leaders.
Britt’s rebuttal to Biden was not only embarrassing, it was a prime example of how Republicans use their demagoguery. The senator used the example of a Mexican woman who was raped several times a day when she was 12. Here’s Katie Britt’s lie:
The facts speak a completely different language: the girl in question is now an adult woman and her name is Karla Jacinto Romero. She is not the victim of a human trafficking gang, but was thrown out of the house by her mother and then fell into the hands of pimps. The rapes did not take place in the US, but in a brothel in Mexico, during the administration of George W. Bush.
Second example of a cringing candidate:
In the state of North Carolina, Republicans have chosen Mark Robinson as their candidate for governor. This could be the first black person in this office. The enthusiasm in the MAGA camp is causing a stir. Trump even speaks of a “Martin Luther King on steroids” and encourages him: “I think you’re at least twice as good as MLK.”
Let’s take a closer look at this 55-year-old boy wonder: It can’t be his looks. Robinson is seriously overweight and makes extreme use of the saying that politics is show business for ugly people. He also has little to offer politically. His rise began in 2018 with hate speech. He successfully fought against the cancellation of a gun show due to the Florida school massacre. That’s why he was elected lieutenant governor of North Carolina in 2019.
Robinson has now made a name for himself as an intolerant hater: his Facebook page contains anti-Semitic slogans and even kind words for Hitler. However, he has since deleted this. He describes transgender people as ‘cow dung’. When a rainbow flag flies over a church, it is an insult to God. Michelle Obama is actually a man and her husband was not born in the U.S., Robinson said. In his eyes, the students protesting against the attacks on their schools are ‘spoiled brats’. Of course, Joe Biden’s victory was the result of a rigged election, etc. etc.
It almost goes without saying that Robinson’s demands and reality are far apart: he wants to introduce a ban on abortion after just six weeks, but has to admit that his wife herself once had an abortion. He also cheated on his taxes and his wife took excessive advantage of the government’s Covid benefits.
In short, Robinson is the perfect embodiment of the state of the Republican Party under Trump. “He is not concerned with liability. He’s all about anger. He’s not selling anything meaningful. He is the instrument of chaotic rage,” notes Frank Bruni in the “New York Times.”
Katie Britt and Mark Robinson are two more additions to Donald Trump’s cabinet of horrors. Democrats will not hesitate to recognize this. In the 2022 midterm elections, it was precisely the extremists among Trump’s favorites who failed, Herschel Walker in Georgia, for example, or Kari Lake in Arizona. In Robinson’s case, North Carolina’s gubernatorial elections traditionally draw large numbers of people to the polls. As a rule, Democrats benefit from this. Since this southern state is now considered “purple,” it means the election could tilt either way and could even result in Biden winning this state in November.
Trump’s cringe-worthy candidates are also proof that talking about the polarization of American politics is wrong. Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin rightly points out that Democrats have become moderate rather than radicalized lately. Even in San Francisco, the stronghold of progressives, representatives of the far left have lost influence to moderates.
Not so the Republicans. Trump’s influence is now total. “The MAGA Republican Party has become shockingly irrational and radical,” Rubin said. “It now embraces totalitarianism, white nationalism and isolationism.”
