The German aid organization Sea Eye regularly rescues boat people from the Mediterranean who encounter problems on their way to Europe. However, the ship “Sea Eye 4” will no longer sail for the next two months. Italy won’t let it slide any longer. Authorities held the ship for 60 days in the port of the southern Italian city of Reggio Calabria, both sides announced on Monday. The authorities justified this by saying that the helpers were taking refugees on board in the Mediterranean Sea, even though the Libyan coast guard was ready to take them. The aid agency said such an action would have violated international law.
The “Sea-Eye 4” arrived on Sunday after a two-and-a-half-week mission in the city on the strait between Sicily and the Italian mainland with a total of 145 migrants on board. According to a spokesperson, most migrants come from Syria and Somalia. They were collected from boats that had made the dangerous journey across the Mediterranean to Europe from Africa.
