The transfer of Josef Fritzl, who became known as the ‘Monster of Amstetten’, from measures to regular enforcement has failed for the time being.
Vienna’s Supreme Court (OLG) has decided that the submitted psychiatric report must be supplemented, Krems Regional Court spokesman Ferdinand Schuster said on Monday. In concrete terms, this involves further research that should provide more precise information about the future danger of the 88-year-old.
The present report denied such a danger. According to the updated analysis, the Krems Regional Court is expected to make another decision in April.
A few weeks ago, the Krems Regional Court ruled that Fritzl should remain behind bars, but could be transferred to the less strict standard prison system under certain conditions.
In 1984, the trained electrical engineer locked his then 18-year-old daughter in the soundproof basement of his home in the small Austrian town of Amstetten. Over the next 24 years, he raped her thousands of times and fathered seven children with her. One of them soon died.
In March 2009 he was sentenced to life imprisonment. The charges in the trial were negligent homicide, rape, deprivation of liberty, aggravated coercion, slavery and incest – he was found guilty on all counts. (rbu/sda/dpa)
