The design of the “Colossea”, a 204 meter long yacht, was presented this week by the Italian Pierpaolo Lazzarini. The designer is known for his futuristic projects. The elegant and futuristic ship resembles other superyachts. But thanks to an airship on the upper deck, the occupants can take to the air in the middle of the ocean.

“The megayacht ‘Colossea’ is a traveling floating docking station for the detachable airship,” Lazzarini’s design studio wrote in a statement. The conceptual look for the Colossea was designed as a tribute to the airship Norge, which made the first voyage to the North Pole almost a century ago. The Colossea airship has the same iconic design and proportions as its predecessor, but with modern materials and a modern propulsion system.

Space for 44 guests and 20 crew members

The superyacht is a landing strip for the airship and is perfectly adapted to its curvature. When the captain decides it’s time to fly, the yacht initiates a process to unlock electromagnetic blocks that lock the airship in place. Then the wind ensures that the airship floats.

The airship can accommodate up to 24 passengers and ten crew members. The yacht is equipped with 22 guest suites and multiple decks with indoor and outdoor pools. She also has a helipad on one of the decks. In total there is room for a maximum of 44 guests and 20 crew members on the “Colossea”. It is estimated that a realization of the conceptual design would cost a billion dollars, but the designer does not yet have an investor. It is therefore unclear if and when the mega yacht will depart.
